Announcement:The wiki will now require you to be registered, and logged in to the Jawug forums before you will be allowed to edit a page. Forum users are now also required to register, and confirm their emails before being allowed to post. Sorry! But this is the web, and forum/wiki spam is a reality. -- RoDent About Jawug:JAWUG is a group of private citizens interested in creating an interconnected network of computers across the greater Johannesburg area using 802.11 technologies. This site serves as a general information and discussion "watering-hole" for the members of JAWUG and the interested public. Check out the News page to see what's new... More infoThe vision of JAWUG is to create the largest Community run Wireless Network in the Johannesburg area. At this point, we are the only stable Community network in Johannesburg. JAWUG is a not-for-profit effort to develop a wireless broadband community network in Johannesburg. Our use of inexpensive, off-the-shelf wireless technology gets around the artificial bottlenecks imposed by the local telco which prevent true, inexpensive, Metro Area Networking. We are using widely available, standards-based RF technology operating in license free frequency, to create a free, locally owned wireless backbone. This means that members will have highspeed network connections to each other. Theoretically, the slowest link could be 1mbit/s, and the fastest could be around 30mbit/s. For the gamers out there, you could play with pings as low as 10ms with other members of the network. You WANT to be a part of it. Please Note: We do NOT sell Internet connectivity! We are using various types of IEEE 802.11b and 802.11g hardware for wireless data communication in the 2.4GHz band. (WiFi) This hardware operates in license-free frequency ranges that are known as the ISM bands. We use mostly Gigabyte, Orinoco, Lucent, Senao, and DLink products that support 802.11b and 802.11g. We use roof mounted antennae to create long-distance directional links and to provide connections between members networks. If you are interested in becoming a member, please register yourself on Wugnet so we can easily locate you. Also, register yourself on this site so we can see who you are and others will be able to plan their nodes better. Our initial plan is to create lots of small community networks around Johannesburg, and as they grow we hope they will grow closer and closer to each other and eventually link together to form JAWUG. Please help us to achieve this vision.
Wireless User Groups in other areas. There's the Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg, Pretoria, and Durban communities to join too. The wireless revolution can start anywhere where enough people are interested. Contact TheRoDent if you need hosting for your WUG. It's free of charge.
