About me: I'm one of those lucky few that gets to pursue my hobbys at "work". Working for the CSIR Meraka Institute, http://www.meraka.org.za , Im part of a research team working on the Wireless Africa project http://wirelessafrica.meraka.org.za/wiki/ .The aim of the project is to research mesh/community owned wireless networks with the aim of providing alternative connectivity solutions to rural areas.

The aim is to contribute to the world-wide "revolution" through our research into things like mesh routing protocols, low cost hardware etc. and we aim to bring these technologies to the rural areas of South Africa, where communities have been failed by telcos and Government. There is no financial incentive, we want the networks to be built, owned, maintained and used by the communities.

My reasons for joining JAWUG are so that I can enjoy my hobby after work as well, much to the dismay of my wife. I try and share what I've learnt at work with the JAWUG community and have learnt lots from the community as well.
