Gigabyte GN-WBKG USB WiFi Dongle

Not much here just some pics. I recently bought two of these things to play with, and pulling them apart was something that had to be done. The dongle is a 2.4Ghz, 54Mbps, 802.11g adapter. Initial tests show this dongle to have better range than a standard un-modded Gigabyte access point. It also works very nicely with NetStumbler+.

What is quite interesting is the weird little ceramic antenna, how such a tiny little thing can perform so well is quite remarkable, even more interesting is on the other side of the PCB by the antenna you can see a small round antenna clip socket thing - meaning an external antenna could be attached!

These things go for under R300 from Recton, with a little modding to attach a decent antenna these things would make a very cheap client node and considering that these little things really push out 100mW (more than the APs from Gigabyte) you may even find the range better.

In fact all things considered, I would expect the range to be better since you would likely mount the usb thing as part of the antenna assembly thus reducing loss from cable and connectors.
