JAWUG

LinkSys kit are cheap, moddable and pretty reliable.

Had a meeting with the Linksys suppliers in SA today, they were very helpful and seemed to be impressed by what we are trying to do in terms of JAWUG. I look forward to hearing more from them regarding their new products and any questions that they have regarding JAWUG. [10/11/2004]---

Sveasoft sells custom firmware for this device that allows access alot of the functionality that is built into it, but just not available through the web interface in the standard firmware. (actually selling is an incorrect term, since the code is all GPL. They sell support for the firmware, you can download the firmware freely, but typically you can't get hold of the CuttingEdge+ stuff without a subscription)

Comment by RoDent: The cutting edge Sveasoft stuff is normally available from http://slashdot.org/~TheIndividual/journal/ Strictly speaking Sveasoft's software can never be sold, since it's based off GPL software. The $20 is for "support". Of course that's just hogwash.

OpenWrtHowTo is probably the most impressive custom firmware for this device if you're the kind of person that likes to fiddle, and doesn't mind configuring via a console. Its freely available, widely supported, and very flexible!

Check out our SuppliersList to see who sells them.

It is my understanding that the Linksys AP's are easy to mod but if you plan to do some serious playing you need to get version v2.0 NOT the v1.0 or v1.1 The reason for this is that the version 1.0 has serious problems with the sveasoft firmware and the v1.1 isnt much better.

The Linksys WRT54G is the nicest device i.m.o, it has lots of ram, and is well-supported. The WAP54G's are nice if all you need is the one side of a TransitNode, or something to bridge with. It doesnt' really have all the nice firewalling features. Of course, I'm still trying to do some more LinksysHacking to see if I can get OpenWrtHowTo (an opensource firmware for the Linksys devices) going on the LinkSysWAP54G's which will turn them into a much more useful device.

Of course, getting an hardware device, rather than a PC based card is always a good idea, and the Linksys kit IS cheap.

{joey} In case you want to use OpenWrtHowTo but still have a fairly decent web-based config interface, try FreiFunk
