JAWUG

poe_adapter.jpg This is a very painless way to inject and then un-inject Power over Ethernet. I have personally tested it with a CAT 5 cable over 20metres. You need 2, and you will also need a female to female 3mm(?) cable ( 2x the same thing thats on your 12v power pack) on the AP side to connect the AP to the un-injector. Jawug sells a complete kit (Injector and splitter) for R170.

Or you can cut open the cable and simply solder the power connector to the cable, and save yourself R170. The WRT54 has a 3.3v Regulator on it, so injecting anything from 40v to 12v should give you very long CAT5 runs - YMMV, use at your own risk, normal disclaimers apply, etc..

4&5 - V+
7&8 - GND

Note: Use PINS 1,2,3 & 6 for your data. When crimping the connector on to the LAN cable, face the RJ45 Clip up so the metal contacts are facing down, PIN 1 is on your far right and PIN 8 is on your far left.

Inside the BoxHere is what it looks like connected. As you can see both APs are running off a single 15m CAT5 (red cable on the right) and a single 12v AC adapter.

This works well if you have all the bits to do it, but if you've gotta go out and buy all the bits, then get a ready-made one from Miro. You only save about R20 doing it yourself.
